Thomas fersen is of that universal type of musician; the melodies that he writes are honest and expand beyond the style they are dressed in. His sense of musical language is pure and comes from somewhere we do not often see in Australia. A mix of middle eastern, gypsy, french music hall and punk rock. But as his last cd, Je Suis Au Paradis shows, he knows how to use strings to accentuate the drama and fragility of a song. He has gathered around him a group of very good musicians able to adapt to any style required and that is another thing we dont see very often here; musicians who aren't afraid to present other styles to their music to give it a depth. The guitarist he uses, Pierre Sangre is extremely gifted.
Thomas Fersen doesn't seem to have any particular interest in showing us in his music, probably because he has quite a substantial following in Europe and Canada.
In the end, it is good music that will be slow to become tired and dated.
