Country music at the movies
There haven’t been a lot of movies made about country singers who aren’t having a meltdown. Crazy Heart – the new film about a hard-living character called Bad Blake and the maudlin story of his washed-up country music career – is another to add to the list, but this one looks like it could be one of the year’s cinematic highlights.
Described as 'half Big Lebowski, half Urban Cowboy meets The Wrestler', Crazy Heart stars Jeff Bridges as ‘Bad Blake’ - a 57 year-old down-and-out alcoholic former country music star who tries to turn his life around in the pursuit of a meaningful relationship – is hotly tipped to earn him his first Academy Award.
Bridges had already reeled in the 2010 Golden Globe for Best Actor for the role. He appears alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal who plays the decades-younger love interest Jean, a journalist who discovers the real man behind the music.
Created by first-time writer director Scott Cooper, the movie is based on the 1987 American novel of the same name by Thomas Cobb.
Crazy Heart opens in Australian cinemas on February 18.
