Golden Guitar award mix-up

Graeme Connors with his Golden Guitar
Jan 24, 2011 Updated Feb 14, 2011

The 39th Country Music Awards of Australia ends with a bang as Lee Kernaghan is accidently awarded Album of the Year instead of the real winner Graeme Connors.

The error was made when Lee Kernaghan was presented with the award by the hosts of the evening Ray Hadley and Beccy Cole, who were handed an envelope containing the previously announced winner of the Top Selling Album – Lee Kernaghan for Planet Country.

The CMAA released a statement the next day, confirming that the recipients of the 2011 Album of the Year, was Graeme Connors and Producer Matt Fell for the Album Still Walking.

“The Association recognises the magnitude of the error and expresses and extends its most sincere apologies to Graeme Connors, Matt Fell, Lee Kernaghan and Garth Porter. The Association also extends its apologies to the hosts of the evening Ray Hadley and Beccy Cole, the country music industry and fans for the error.”

Kernaghan and Connors are said to have “graciously” accepted that there had been a mistake.

In a statement released on Sunday, Kernaghan congratulated Connors on his win.

"The most important thing is that the correct winner takes home the Golden Guitar," he said.

"There is such thing as human error and this is what occurred on the night."

Connors, who also won the award for Male Artist of the Year, said receiving the award was a “great honour”.

"Part of the beauty of our humanity is that we occasionally make mistakes - this one has been easily rectified - and in the current situation, with so many dire events surrounding us, is a very small hiccup."
