Golden Guitar gaffe to be investigated

Lee Kernaghan with his Golden Guitar before the mistake was revealed
Feb 2, 2011 Updated Feb 14, 2011

It’s a mistake the CMAA are probably keen to forget, but now the bungled Golden Guitar presentation for 'Album of the Year' will be investigated by a retired police prosecutor.

The blunder happened during the CMAA Awards in Tamworth last month, when the biggest award of the year, Album of the Year, was presented to Lee Kernaghan instead of Graeme Connors.

Organisers apologised the following day and acknowledged Connors as the correct winner for his album Still Walking.

But with observers still asking “what went wrong?”, Tamworth-based Ian Burkinshaw has been appointed to investigate  and find out why the error was not immediately corrected.

CMAA chairman Rod Laing welcomed the investigation and said the board was “embarrassed” by the gaffe.

"If there is something that is certainly not right, if there is an alleged cover-up, if that's proven to be true well, there's got to be action, especially if the board want to retain their credibility and the credibility of the awards as well," he told AAP.
