Hank Williams
Apr 13, 2010 Updated Apr 27, 2010

Hank Williams is being posthumously awarded a citation from the Pulitzer Prize board for his lifetime achievement as a musician.

The Special Citation was determined based on a private survey of experts in popular music and notes Williams' 'craftsmanship as a songwriter' and his 'pivotal role in transforming country music into a major musical and cultural force'.

The country music icon died in 1953 aged 29, in what was widely believd to be the result of a combination of drugs and alcohol.

His death cut short a career in songwriting that reflected the hopes and struggles of everyday Americans, and continues to influence popular music in America and around the world. His work has been covered by everyone from Bob Dylan, to Tony Bennett, to Coldplay, to Buddy Guy.

The news of the citation came in conjunction with the announcement of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize recipients in journalism, drama and music.
