Australian guitarist Tommy Emmanuel has been made a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in this year's Queen's Birthday Honours list.

Emmanuel, now based in Nashville, says he is honoured to be the recipient of the award.

"This is such a thrill for me. It means so much to me to know my homeland has awarded me such a prestigious award. I couldn't be more proud," he said.

During his career Emmanuel has played with Chet Atkins, Eric Clapton, Air Supply and Les Paul, and was a member of John Farnham's band.

He's know for his complex fingerpicking which borrows from the style of notable American fingerpickers like Atkins and Merle Travis.

The Order of Australia award was established 'for the purpose of according recognition to Australian citizens and other persons for achievement or for meritorious service'.

Emmanuel is planning a tour to Australia later this year.
