Wilson Pickers on tour ahead of new album
If you like your country twang dished up with a side of indie, a bit of blues, loads of energy and plenty of vocal harmonising, chances are you’ll like The Wilson Pickers.
This all-star musical collaboration is Danny Widdicombe, Ben Salter (The Gin Club) and Andrew Morris (ex-Palladium) from Queensland, plus Victorians Sime Nugent and John Bedggood - a talented quintet who take their cues from bluegrass traditionalists to create a rollicking and distinctly Australian sound of their own.
Album number one - 2008’s Land of the Powerful Owl, with its live sound and contagious energy – earned the band rave reviews and a nomination for Best Blues and Roots Album in the 2009 Aria Awards. Last year the band laid down an album of covers with Jolene, paying tribute to folk and country masters like Dolly Parton, Bob Dylan, Paul Kelly and Steve Earl.
Their follow up record Shake It Down is due out in May.
The Wilson Pickers will play gigs in Sydney Thredbo, Melbourne and Apollo Bay before heading to Byron Bay in April for Bluesfest, where they’ll be shooting a music video. They’re inviting fans to join them in town on Easter Sunday to be part of the on-camera action.
Tour dates:
4 March - Notes, Newtown, NSW (with support from Wagons)
6 March - CMC Rocks the Snowys, Thredbo, NSW
25 March - The East Brunswick Club, Melbourne, Vic
26-28 March - Apollo Bay Music Festival, Apollo Bay, Vic
1-5 April – Bluesfest, Byron Bay, NSW
